Year 11: Careers Diary

September/October

  • Careers interviews start
  • Look at College and 6th form opportunities and attend open evenings.
  • Find out more about work-based training (Foundation Modern Apprenticeships and Advanced Modern Apprenticeships)
  • Start researching my options by using the careers library in school.

November/December

  • Applications for college and 6th form need to be in.
  • Use the careers library.

January/February

  • If going for a job or college interview, make sure I am prepared. Read interview tips.
  • Do I need to see my Careers Adviser again?

March/April

  • Start to revise for my GCSEs.
  • Keep in touch with my Careers Adviser.
  • If I want a job or Modern Apprenticeship, I need to start checking the careers noticeboard for any vacancies.

May/June

  • GCSEs start
  • School leaving date is the end of June.
  • If I want a job or Modern Apprenticeship, I need to start applying now - check vacancies at my local Careers and Job Search Centre and read the local newspapers.

July/August

  • Keep in touch with my Careers Adviser/Personal Adviser if I need help with applying for training or jobs.
  • If my exam results are better then expected or not as good as I'd hoped for, I need to consider other options. Speak to my Careers Adviser either at school or at my local Careers or Job Search Centre.
  • If planning to go onto further education I need to get an application form for Education Maintenance Allowance to help support my studies.
  • If planning to leave full-time education, I need to register at the Careers and Job Search Centre in order to claim Extended Child Benefit or other benefits that I may be entitled to. Talk this through with my parents/carers
