Year 11: Application Advice

Application Forms

How to complete an application form

Many employers/ colleges produce their own application forms that you will need to fill in when applying for a job/course
  • Always read through the whole form before you start to fill it in so that you put all the information in the right places.
  • Answer the questions in rough before completing the application form itself. Either write your answers on a separate sheet of paper or, if possible, photocopy the original form.
  • Follow the instructions carefully e.g. complete in black ink.
  • Try to answer all the questions fully. Include all relevant information, make sure you tell them about all your achievements and interests as employers/admissions tutors are very interested in you as an individual.
  • Make sure you list all courses and qualifications if required. If you haven't got many, then highlight what you have learnt from experience.
  • Read thoroughly any background information you may have received from the company/college. You may need this information to complete your application form effectively.
  • Try to answer every question. If something does not apply to you write N/A (not applicable).
  • Remember to sign and date the form.
  • Make sure your application is neat and tidy.
  • Check your form is accurate e.g. make sure all dates are correct and that you have not made any spelling mistakes.
  • Keep a photocopy of your completed form before you send it off. This will help you remember what you have included if you are called for an interview. It will also help you in filling out other application forms.
  • Ensure you return the application form as soon as possible. A closing date is usually stated and late applications are often not accepted.
  • Remember to keep a list for your own reference of jobs/courses you have applied for, the name of the contact, the date you applied and whether you sent your CV etc
