Year 11: Options at 16+

Further Education

If you want to continue into further education, the choice of course and institution is wide ranging and potentially confusing.

Institutions can be categorised into two main types:

  • Sixth forms (in 11 to 18 schools)
  • Post 16 colleges (sixth form/further education/tertiary colleges)
Students from all schools may apply to any colleges/sixth form.

Do not forget, some courses have closing dates for applications so find out about those you're interested in as soon as possible.

Funding for further education

Most students aged 16-18 on full time further education courses do not have to pay tuition fees, except in certain circumstances e.g. private drama courses, private health and beauty courses.

To assist with the costs associated with continuing education e.g. travel, equipment, books etc., you may be entitled to receive an Education Maintenance Allowance, which could be as much as £30 per week in term time.
Depending on your circumstances, you could also be entitled to additional financial support including, Learner Support Funds, help with childcare, state benefits etc. For more details, call into your local Careers and Job Search Centre.
