Education or employment interview tips

Your whole future may depend on your performance at an interview. You have a short space of time to convince an interviewer that you are the right person for the job/course. It is important to be prepared.

Pre-interview checklist

  • Check the time and date of the interview and confirm, either by telephone or in writing, that you will/will not be attending.
  • Check your transport details - how you will get there e.g. by bus, train etc., and how long it will take. It possible, do a trial or 'dummy' run to see how long you need to allow for your journey.
  • Before the interview, find out as much as you can about the job/company or college/course.
  • Collect any documents or certificates you might need to take to the interview, e.g. Record of Achievement, exam certificates.
  • Re read your copy of the application form you filled in.
  • Prepare a list of questions - those you may be asked and those you may want to ask yourself.

Making an impression

  • Aim to look smart and well presented. Your clothes need not be new but make sure they are clean and neatly ironed.
  • Arrive on time, ideally 5-10 minutes early.
  • Remember to knock first before entering a room.
  • Be prepared to shake hands with your interviewer.
  • Wait to be asked to sit down and try to sit relatively still but relaxed try not to fidget.
  • Listen carefully to the interviewers and take your time before answering any question.
  • Always attempt to look the interviewer in the eye- If there is more than one interviewer address your response to the person who asked the question, but look at the others from time to time.
  • Avoid smoking, chewing and eating.
  • Don't worry about being nervous - everyone is! The interviewer will expect this and make allowances.
